Continuing my journey in Perdita with the Caskey clan。 Halfway through the series with this one and time really flies。

Legit chills。 I hate that stupid closet。 Reading these alone does not mean much, have to take the whole book in order to give a full review, so not much to say yet。

Another epic chapter in the Casky family saga。 Thoroughly enjoying it。 Enough odd and strange to keep you interested。

The plot thickens!!!! So many things I’ve been wondering about, hoping for and afraid of came to pass in this book。 It’s been a hell of a ride。 I am now completely hooked and I am beside myself with anticipation for what’s to come!!!

Love this series to bits。 Overwrought family saga plus just enough supernatural horror。 Perfect。

A body will be mangled, all bones dislocated, ligaments torn, organs displaced, the body curved into a small ball and stuffed in a sack and drowned in the red muddy waters。 Mama will be given Perdido river water to drink, gets a fever, gets fed more river water and will drown in her bed, not before being visited by a boy who drowned 12 years before who comes out of the closet。 Mariam really hates her parents。 The soap saga continues, highly addictive, such a pleasant, familiar story which has everything。 。。。more

With Elinor having finally Lady Macbethed/Walter Whited/Cersei’d her way to matriarch of the Caskey family, and with half the saga still to go, I can’t wait to read what happens next。But I’m going to take a short break first to read something else。

The Elementals is still my favorite book by McDowell, but the Blackwater series really gets cooking in book #3。 I had a few of those moments where you have to close the book after reading a surprisingly terrifying sentence that comes out of nowhere, which is what McDowell does best。 The Elementals is still my favorite book by McDowell, but the Blackwater series really gets cooking in book #3。 I had a few of those moments where you have to close the book after reading a surprisingly terrifying sentence that comes out of nowhere, which is what McDowell does best。 。。。more

In the third book of the Blackwater saga, plot points of the past begin to come together, tensions rise, and supernatural occurrences plague the Caskey family。 Elinor and Mary Love’s animosity towards one another comes to a head when Mary Love does not do right by her son financially, resulting in dire consequences。 Miriam is coming into her own and is very evidently following in the footsteps of her “mother” Mary Love。 This book contained pivotal information to the saga and I love that it conta In the third book of the Blackwater saga, plot points of the past begin to come together, tensions rise, and supernatural occurrences plague the Caskey family。 Elinor and Mary Love’s animosity towards one another comes to a head when Mary Love does not do right by her son financially, resulting in dire consequences。 Miriam is coming into her own and is very evidently following in the footsteps of her “mother” Mary Love。 This book contained pivotal information to the saga and I love that it contained more supernatural elements than The Levee。 This book shocked me in a multitude of ways and I cannot wait to see how these carry over into the next book, The War。 。。。more

I liked it。 There are some weird parts, like continual reference to a Caskey family member buying a little boy, which I know in the context of the book isn't bad, but man it is weird to read and weirder to try to make it normal。 It is an interesting family saga。 I liked it。 There are some weird parts, like continual reference to a Caskey family member buying a little boy, which I know in the context of the book isn't bad, but man it is weird to read and weirder to try to make it normal。 It is an interesting family saga。 。。。more

For all that Elinor is the Monster, husband-dude was the one I wanted dead and Mary-love the one causing me the most grief。 It's a very Umbridge syndrome, I realize, because I happen to know some old people with like dispositions, and one old woman specially that she reminds me off so damn hard。I hope this insistence on closing with the closet pays off when the whole is done, because OMG, the circle of war between mothers and daughters (in laws) was perfectly closed and renued the chapter before For all that Elinor is the Monster, husband-dude was the one I wanted dead and Mary-love the one causing me the most grief。 It's a very Umbridge syndrome, I realize, because I happen to know some old people with like dispositions, and one old woman specially that she reminds me off so damn hard。I hope this insistence on closing with the closet pays off when the whole is done, because OMG, the circle of war between mothers and daughters (in laws) was perfectly closed and renued the chapter before。 。。。more

McDowell ramps up the horror in the third instalment of his decades-spanning multi-generational epic。 A mid-game curtailment of a secondary plot strand involves the darkest, most gruesome set-piece the saga has yet deliver。 Elsewhere, McDowell manages the impressive trick of wrapping up a major storyline in a manner that fragments everything else and sends the series spinning off in who know what new directions。

Lots happening in this one。 Time skips, deaths, spookies。 Very good。

#3 in the Blackwater saga。 The multi-generation story enters the Great Depression。

The flow from one book to another is amazing。 A direct connect to the previous, so there are no questions as to what happened between time。

This series keeps getting better。 Elinor may be one of my favorite villains (?) ever。

This is a great series。 In many ways, it's like a soap opera of the American South, with subtle supernatural elements。 I'm surprised that this hasn't been made into a television series, because I think it would work out quite well。 Of course, maybe these books have been adapted for TV, and I missed it。 I'm not much of a TV-watcher。I wonder if anyone would consider McDowell to be the Faulkner of horror novels? I'm not a Faulkner expert, so I hesitate to make such a claim myself。 These books inclu This is a great series。 In many ways, it's like a soap opera of the American South, with subtle supernatural elements。 I'm surprised that this hasn't been made into a television series, because I think it would work out quite well。 Of course, maybe these books have been adapted for TV, and I missed it。 I'm not much of a TV-watcher。I wonder if anyone would consider McDowell to be the Faulkner of horror novels? In Perdido, Alabama, the plot continues to thicken。 I'm now halfway through these books and some of the birds are coming home to roost。 Additionally, we creep more and more away from the Southern Gothic tone and more and more towards the feeling of dread developed in a good horror story。 The Caskeys still don't seem to like each other terribly well。 We're now seeing the changing of command from Miss Mary Love to。。。someone else。 Her brother, James, is too mild-mannered for the task of running the In Perdido, Alabama, the plot continues to thicken。 I'm now halfway through these books and some of the birds are coming home to roost。 Additionally, we creep more and more away from the Southern Gothic tone and more and more towards the feeling of dread developed in a good horror story。 The Caskeys still don't seem to like each other terribly well。 We're now seeing the changing of command from Miss Mary Love to。。。someone else。 Her brother, James, is too mild-mannered for the task of running the family。 The family is used to following a woman, so Oscar is out。 Sister lives "away。" Everyone has begun to lean towards the odd, but known force that is Elinor。 Oh。。。and the thing that's been occupying the front closet at Elinor and Oscar's house is now free to roam away from the front bedroom。 Things are bumping in the night, and while their older daughter plans a coup from Miss Mary Love's house, their younger daughter may be the one at risk。 Be back when I finish part IV! 。。。more

This series is the most unique horror I have encountered。 Unlike all others in pace, but strangely familiar in its intimacy of the family portrait。

I entered this book with the hope that this will be a southern gothic haunted house book。 While it was effective, it did not quite scratch that itch, so I will need to read The Elementals。Sister bugged out off-screen between books two and three, and I’m glad she came back, because they spent an awful amount of time on her and Early in the last book, and I’d have been annoyed if that had been a lot of investment for nothing。The closet in the front room of the Caskie house is messing me up, partia I entered this book with the hope that this will be a southern gothic haunted house book。 While it was effective, it did not quite scratch that itch, so I will need to read The Elementals。Sister bugged out off-screen between books two and three, and I’m glad she came back, because they spent an awful amount of time on her and Early in the last book, and I’d have been annoyed if that had been a lot of investment for nothing。The closet in the front room of the Caskie house is messing me up, partially because of an episode of a television show I watched back when I was impressionable (and lived in a house with a very short door into an attic space。) Fast forward to me reading the Tales from the Darkside anthology, because I remember that show fondly。 When I got to "In the Closet" my anxiety spiked, because it should come as no surprise why the closet in the Caskie house should mess me up so much。 McDowell is officially responsible for many nights of lost sleep and anxiety。So the closet and the trip to the headwaters of the Perdido were all amazingly tense。 I am hooked and continuing。 This is definitely a third act of potentially six parts。 It is difficult to judge on its own, because it does not stand effectively by itself。 I can’t rate this book by itself more than a three, but I will likely score the whole series high。 That said, there were definitely more monsters and killing in this book, which is always a bonus。 。。。more

I understand why these novellas were consolidated into one collection。 The way each book abruptly ends it’s more like a chapter ending than a book ending。 It isn’t even a true cliffhanger in my opinion。 As with the other books, I find myself on Elinor’s side versus every other character。 I dislike her mother in law as well as Elinor’s oldest daughter。 I can’t understand how her husband is oblivious to her culpability in the disappearances/ murders that occur in town。 I am pretty sure the servant I understand why these novellas were consolidated into one collection。 The way each book abruptly ends it’s more like a chapter ending than a book ending。 It isn’t even a true cliffhanger in my opinion。 As with the other books, I find myself on Elinor’s side versus every other character。 I dislike her mother in law as well as Elinor’s oldest daughter。 I can’t understand how her husband is oblivious to her culpability in the disappearances/ murders that occur in town。 I am pretty sure the servants know。 The book is considered southern gothic horror and although I am mesmerized by where this is going, I don’t consider it scary at all。 Still, extremely well written。 。。。more

It’s been only a year and a half since I read and reviewed the previous volume in the Blackwater saga, The Levee。 I enjoyed the hell out of that book, as I did this one, so why the long wait? And boy, The House is a treat。 This series is only getting better with each book, and in this one previous plot-lines come to a head, making for some excellent suspense and scenes of true horror。 And I must say a certain death in this book actually shocked me—I didn’t think the plot would allow for it to happen, but that made the experience more fun—and even though said character isn’t, um, the most likable I dug him/her。 I’m curious where the story will go without that person。 Should I start volume 4? Should I wait till next month? I don’t know, but I’m itching to get my next fix。 Michael McDowell’s books deserve all the praise they get, and more。 。。。more
